What is a Forensic Interview?
Forensic interviews are designed to focus on the child’s well-being while gently gathering information for criminal investigations. The CARE Center is a comfortable, child-friendly environment that looks just like a home. There, a child only has to talk about their experience once, at their own pace.
We follow the New York State best practices in forensic interviewing standards. Interviews are conducted by highly-trained professionals and are done in a safe, trauma-informed manner.
Information for Caregivers
If the child you are caring for is forensically interviewed, here’s what you can expect:
- Welcoming environment: You will be greeted by one of our friendly CARE Center staff members and guided to our Family Waiting Room, where we will ensure you and your family are comfortable.
- Support throughout: You’ll be introduced to an advocate who will be by your side throughout the entire process, providing support, answering questions, and keeping you informed every step of the way.
- Age-appropriate, child-friendly approach: We understand how important it is for your child to feel safe, so we take time to build trust and ensure they feel reassured about our process.
- About two hours: Typically, your visit will last about two hours, but this may vary depending on your child’s needs and the specific circumstances.
- Summarization: When possible, we will offer you a summary of what we can do while being mindful of the active investigation.

What to Expect During a Forensic Interview
Throughout the forensic interview, the child’s well-being is the main priority. The trained forensic interviewer starts by informing the child of what they can expect and reassures them that they have done nothing wrong. The child is also informed that they can take a break whenever they need one. During breaks, the team meets to discuss how best to proceed. The child is never left alone in the room.
