A medical examination can be offered to any child brought to the CARE Center for concerns about abuse or neglect that aren’t urgent. A trained, licensed medical doctor provides all medical services at no charge to the family.
What is a Forensic Medical Examination?
A forensic medical examination ensures a child’s body is safe and healthy following the concerns or allegations of abuse. These examinations are available to any child brought to the CARE Center for non-emergent concerns of child maltreatment. All evaluations are conducted by a trained, board-certified pediatric medical doctor in a supportive, child-friendly environment.
The examination includes a comprehensive medical history review and a non-invasive, head-to-toe physical exam to best assess the child’s health and well-being while minimizing any discomfort or fear. These examinations are performed in a sensitive and compassionate manner to make sure that the child’s emotional and physical needs are met.
What to Expect During a Forensic Medical Examination
If the child you are caring for needs a forensic medication examination, here’s what you can expect:
- Welcoming environment: You will be greeted by one of our friendly CARE Center staff members and guided to our Family Waiting Room, where we will ensure you and your family are comfortable.
- A set process: We will review and explain all necessary consent forms. We also complete the New York State Office of Victims Services reimbursement form to ensure there is no cost to your family.
- Support throughout: You’ll be introduced to an advocate who will be by your side throughout the entire process, providing support, answering questions, and keeping you informed every step of the way.
- Child-friendly approach: We take time to build trust with your child, explaining the examination in a reassuring and age-appropriate manner to help them feel safe.
- Examination: A board-certified pediatric medical doctor will guide your child to the examination room for a thorough, non-invasive physical exam. The goal is to ensure their health and well-being without causing any unnecessary stress.
- About one hour: Typically, the examination will last about one hour, though this may vary depending on the circumstances.
- Referrals: We will provide you with any insights we can and offer referrals for follow-up care or additional resources.
