At the Warren-Washington CARE Center, we believe that helping children heal and making our community a safer place is a team effort. Our work brings together dedicated professionals from multiple agencies, all trained to respond, intervene, investigate, and offer treatment to victims of child abuse and their families.
We coordinate a multidisciplinary team (MDT) of partners involved in the child abuse investigation process.
Our Multidisciplinary Team Members
Here is a closer look at the professionals who may be involved in supporting children and families throughout the investigation and healing process.
Child Protective Services
The role of CPS is to protect child. Specially-trained caseworkers conduct interviews and develop safety and service plans to help families navigate the situation with care and understanding.
Law Enforcement
Depending on the details of the case, law enforcement investigators with specialized training in child abuse cases may be involved. Their role is to investigate and make sure all necessary steps are taken to protect the child.
The District Attorney’s Office
- Assistant District Attorney (ADA): The ADA makes the final decision on whether there is enough evidence to move forward with criminal charges. They carefully consider all the circumstances that will affect the likelihood of success in court.
- Victim Specialist: A victim specialist is by the child’s side throughout the legal process to provide support, make referrals, and guide caregivers through court proceedings, including preparation, pleas, and sentencing.
Victim Advocacy
Victim advocates provide emotional support for child victims and their non-offending family members. Victim advocates can provide immediate crisis counseling, resources for licensed professional counselors, and other support services for victims of crime and their non-offending family members.
Mental Health Services
The CARE Center can refer to a mental health provider for ongoing emotional and psychological care.
Glens Falls Hospital
If needed, children may be taken to the emergency room for an examination and treatment of acute injuries. New York State Office of Victim Services (OVS) covers the cost of forensic medical exams performed at hospitals in New York State.
Medical Consultation
If deemed necessary, a non-acute forensic medical examination can be accessed at the CARE Center. A trained, licensed medical doctor provides all medical services at no charge to the family.
